Reviews
Liu Shaotang, one of the best exemplary writers of the “Lotus Lake School”, is also known as “The Son of the Grand Canal”. He writes mostly the rural life in the Jing Dong Canal (North Canal) area. His style is considered fresh and plain, and yet full of the local flavors. Published in 1980, The Puliu People is one of his most representative works. It immediately became a best seller for its unique writing style and received praise from many across China’s literary circles.
The novel, through a visual representation of the landscape and customs of the local area, profoundly portrays the simple, honest local people along the Jing Dong Canal: their happiness and sorrow, their kindness and noble emotions, depicting the villagers’ rich inner world and their contributions in the world. The writing style of the work, which is lyrical, beautiful, fresh, possessing both the true feelings and the mastery of details, boasts a unique aesthetic style. At the same time, the author is also adept in using the local language and the natural flow of dialects. As a result, his texts provide materials for the exploration of the theory of “geographical writing”.

In the year 1936, He Manzi turned six-year-old. He liked his aunt Wang Rilian, who was then already nineteen years old, with a nickname called the “poor unfortunate child.” She was the He family’s east neighbor – Du family’s Child bride.
Twelve years ago, Du Si (who had a nickname called “the flowery shoes”), the owner of a shoe shop at the ferry port had bought the little girl from the hand of a hungry refugee and took her home. Later, the husband of the then ten-year-old “poor unfortunate child” Wang Rilian, was captured by the army and had been missing ever since. Wang Rilian worked all day everyday and was often beaten. He Manzi’s grandparents pitied her and adopted her as their goddaughter. He Manzi enjoyed playing with her by the side of the river with firewood and branches, where he could play freely.
When Wang Rilian was collecting firewood, she would often saw the next door neighbour to the west, Zhou Qin. And they liked each other and often played together. They gradually developed feelings for each other.
Du Si and his wife (who also had a nickname called the “yellowish bean leaf”) had evil intentions against Wang Rilian. Even though she escaped from the plot against her, she couldn’t avoid her continuous suffering from heavy labor work, as she still had to work all year long, day and night. Wang Rilian was missing Zhou Qin terribly, so on the Chinese Valentine’s day (7th day of the lunar 7th year), she followed the local custom of “praying to the Moon for miracles,” holding in her hands candles and incense as well as needlework, wishing to be reunited with her beloved one.
Zhou Qin, who just returned from school, began encouraging the villagers, Ji Laocheng, Zhang Duanwu and some others to stand up and fight against Japan troops. He also encouraged Wang Rilian to participate in the National Patriotic Association to fight against the “devils” – the foreign invaders and to uncover the traitors. He also vowed that he would save her from her abyss of suffering and build their life together as couple on the foundation of their shared values and goals, and live together for their entire life until the end.
However, a Flood-Prevention Bureau staff named Ma Leizi and Du Zi were secretly planning the capture of Zhou Wenbin, who was a Communist Party member. They also plotted on selling Wang Zilian for money. The Chinese Halloween arrived on the 15th July of the Lunar Calendar and when the night fell, the few leading villagers - Zhou Qin, He the Wise Man, aunt Yizhangqing, Liu Guandou and Ji Laocheng, along with other villagers acted together in defeating Ma Leizi and Du Zi’s evil plot and conspiracy. They also helped Zhou Qin and Wang Zilian get married with each other.
Later on, Zhou Qin passed the university entrance exam and was admitted to the university in Beijing. However, he gave up all this and continued to stay in the village, where he engaged himself in activities such as running schools and training villager fighters.
